Our Environment

Conducting our business in an environmentally responsible manner is an integral part of how we operate.

Consistent with our commitment to Responsible Care, we invest in programs that aim to reduce the environmental impact of our railcar maintenance facilities and to reduce the potential for a commodity release from our railcars. We strive to take a leadership position in voluntary environmental initiatives by working proactively with government agencies, environmental groups, and industries. We also aim to comply with all applicable environmental regulatory requirements in the regions where we operate.

Energy

We recognize that conserving energy reduces pollutants released into the air and helps us reduce costs.

With this in mind, we continue to invest in key facility enhancements and incorporate sustainability principles into our operations with the goal of improving the energy efficiency of our railcar maintenance facilities and offices.

Water

We strive to operate our railcar maintenance facilities and offices to efficiently utilize water.

We accomplish this by reducing consumption and seeking recycling opportunities.

Waste

GATX is focused on diverting waste from landfills by reducing waste generation and maximizing re-use opportunities.

We collaborate with our waste management vendors to identify recycling opportunities and seek to ensure that the waste we produce is treated or disposed of in a safe and responsible manner.

The primary waste streams from our operations come from our railcar maintenance facilities and include residual customer commodity waste, grit dust, recycled scrap metal, and wastes generated from painting and lining activities.

Air Emissions

Clean air is important for protecting human health and the environment.

GATX is committed to maintaining compliance with air quality standards at railcar maintenance facilities by monitoring emissions, using control technologies to capture and reduce emissions, and identifying opportunities to reduce emissions by improving efficiency or substituting materials.

In 2021, we began publishing companywide Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG Emissions data. Since our operations do not produce a significant amount of emissions, we consider the direct and indirect climate-related impact of our operations to be limited.
