Coil Gondolas

Coil gondolas carry steel coils with longitudinal or transverse troughs and end-of-car cushioning. They can handle an estimated load limit of up to 230,000 lbs based on the 286,000 gross rail limit. Coil gondolas are available in covered and uncovered varieties – covered cars carry cold-rolled steel while open-top cars carry hot-band steel coils.

The longitudinal design can hold a larger diameter and number of coils. The transverse design typically carries smaller sized coils and with the option for 5, 7, or 9 troughs. Some customers prefer the transverse troughs because the coils can be loaded from the side of the using a fork truck, rather than requiring a crane.
