OPEN POSITIONS: PAINTER/LINING APPLICATOR
GATX Rail Canada is looking for individuals to fill several full-time positions as RAILCAR PAINTER / LINING APPLICATORS for its railcars maintenance facility located at 4310 77 Street, Red Deer, AB T4P 3P7. The individuals on these roles will blast equipment to remove paint, dirt, scale and other materials from inside and/or outside if railcars and associated parts with abrasive steel grit. This position also operates paint spray guns and/or uses hand brush or roller to apply paint to the exterior of railcars, car parts, assemblies and subassemblies. Stencils all reporting requirements on railcars including car identification, test dates, due dates, etc..

Responsibilities:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to:
- Adjusts blast equipment as necessary, changes hoses and fittings as necessary, removes foreign matter from grit as necessary and dismantles parts of machines to remove foreign matter as necessary
- Changes tips on spray guns to attain specified pattern. Regulates pump air pressure and temperature of coating solution. Operates controls on man-movers to position paint gun at optimum distance from railcar to achieve satisfactory spray pattern and millage.
- Performs other minor maintenance to blast equipment.
- Manually pours or shovels abrasive material to replenish supply as needed
- Prepare railcars for blast by covering specific parts of the railcar as needed and uncovering after blasting is complet
- Manually blasts and cleans areas inside and /or outside of the railcar removing paint, dirt, scale, and other materials in preparation for paint applications.
- Cleans railcars as needed before and after blast.
Qualifications:
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- At least a High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- NACE level 1 certification preferred
- Experience in Industrial painting acquired through formal training or prior work experience
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as repair manuals, instructions, work orders , ect...
- Ability to work effectively individually and / or in groups
- Initiative: Have a personal motivation and autonomy to determine and carry out important tasks
- Diligence and reliability at work: be able to complete all hours of work, rarely absent and be able to complete all assigned tasks at a reasonable period of time
OTHER THINGS TO NOTE:
- Must be able to stoop for extended periods and routinely move from kneeling to standing positions
- Must be able to perform overhead work for extended periods
- Must be able to lift (vertically) up to 85 pounds from the ground surface
- Must be able to push / pull (horizontally) up to 140 pounds
- Must be able to climb ladders and perform work at elevated heights
- Must be able to work in extreme temperature environments
- Must be able to physically enter confined space (rail car manways as small as 18” in diameter) and work in enclosed environments
