Car Repairer/Boiler Operator

POSITION: BOILER OPERATOR
Reporting to CGMJ railcar cleaning department, the employee will perform all aspects of railcar cleaning per GATX procedures and policies. Maintain and operate boiler, Raptor, steam equipment, water management systems, closed loop cleaning system, and flare equipment.
Responsibilities:
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Clerical – ensures that all necessary work order documentation is complete to facilitate correct and timely completion.
- Perform repair and rebuild duties to include, but not limited to the following:
- Set an example and conduct activities consistent with the core values of GATX Rail, contributing to a positive environment for communication, empowerment, and continuous improvement.
- Uses technical expertise and problem-solving ability to maintain and repair a quality product.
- Strives to produce in accordance with priority goals to ensure on-time delivery.
- Update Shop Portal, paper forms, and other documentation required by GATX procedures
- Oversee all aspects of boiler operation, inspection, maintenance, and certification
- Maintain boiler room equipment and facilities
- Perform and oversee all aspects of railcar cleaning
- Participate in SQDC Daily management meetings
- Pre-work that includes removing fittings, cutting jackets, and any other duties assigned for pre-work.

- Uses technical expertise and problem-solving ability to maintain and repair a quality product.
- Assists with planning, and scheduling departmental productions in accordance with priority goals to ensure an on-time delivery.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED: Boiler, Raptor, Wash heads, pressure washer, torque wrench, pneumatic tools, measuring devices, jackhammer, vapor-blaster, lifting equipment (forklift, crane, lift table, etc), and assorted hand tools and gauges. Shop Portal, SharePoint, CI methods and procedures.
Qualifications:
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent required
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, work orders, operating and maintenance instructions, and drawings.
- Current 5th Class Engineer
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as IO instructions, FM instructions, work orders, AAR Field Manual, etc.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to reason through and plan work details and procedures to obtain desired results.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Perform semi-routine jobs where judgment is required to obtain results. Ability to make changes in routine or sequence on repetitive jobs involving selection, positioning, and manual tasks such as positioning, assembling, etc., at a steady pace where accuracy and dexterity of a high degree are required. Ability to read, access, and interpret diagrams, Excel spreadsheets, and company policies.
Ability to work well with others in a positive manner
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Must be able to stoop for extended periods and routinely move from kneeling to standing positions
- Must be able to perform overhead work for extended periods
- Must be able to lift (vertically) up to 85 pounds from the ground surface
- Must be able to push/pull (horizontally) up to 140 pounds
- Must be able to climb ladders and perform work at elevated heights
- Must be able to work in extreme temperature environments
- The noise level in the work environment is usually loud to moderate, hearing protection must be worn.
- Must be able to physically enter confined spaces (rail car manways as small as 18” in diameter) and work in enclosed environments
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this position, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and might be exposed to indoor and outside work conditions.
