Arc Welder

In this role, the Arc welds ferrous materials by use of electric arc process in all positions per AWS D15.1 and in compliance with prescribed codes and specifications. Performs tests, repairs changes, does improvements and conversions to railcar parts and assemblies.
Responsibilities:
- Moves, sets up and adjusts equipment and selects rod to perform work assigned.
- Prepares surface to be welded; burns, gauges, fits, tacks and welds as necessary to complete repair. (Example: Splices, patches, shims, cracks)
- Locates and tests areas to be welded for leaks by use of soap suds and air rechecking as necessary. (Example: coils)
- Finishes weld by removing slag and grinding when necessary.
- Jacks cars, remove trucks, positions to tank rolls, disassembles to repair or gain access to parts needing repair and reassembles as necessary.
- Assists other workman in placing, fitting and attaching of parts as assigned.
- Remove, replace, layout, burn, shape ream, and straighten as necessary to perform various repairs to: tank shell proper, fittings, couplers, gears, underframe, safety appliances, insulation jacket and related components.
- Performs minor layouts required in performance of prescribed duties.
- Lubricates and makes minor repairs to assigned small power, mechanical and hand tools, replacing broken and worn parts. Lubricate, gauge and adjust car parts as necessary.
- Certifications are held per AWS D15.1.
- Communicate with supervisor as needed.
- Keeps work area in a clean and orderly manner.
- Comply with the established safety policies, support-continuing awareness for safety, and when possible recommend specific changes and improvements to health and safety policies and programs.
Qualifications:
Education and/or Experience Required (including certifications):
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as IO instructions, FM instructions, work orders, and AAR Field Manual.
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide two-digit numbers.
- Ability to reason through and plan work details and procedures to obtain desired results.
Key Competencies:
- Knowledgeable of AAR regulations and railcar repairs.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Basic computer knowledge and strong communication skills -- experience.
- Able to follow verbal and written instructions.
Physical Demands:
- Must be able to stoop for extended periods and routinely move from kneeling to standing positions.
- Must be able to perform overhead work for extended periods.
- Must be able to safely lift (vertically) up to 51 pounds, regularly, and safely lift up to 85 pounds, occasionally, from the ground surface.
- Must be able to push/pull (horizontally) up to 140 pounds of force.
- Must be able to climb ladders and perform work at elevated heights.
- Must be able to work in extreme temperature environments.
- Must be able to physically enter confined space and work in enclosed environments.
As of February 20, 2025, the salary range for this position is $28.59 to $29.18 per hour.
The rate for this position is determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
