Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
A Culture of Inclusion
At GATX, we are committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment where our employees feel valued and welcomed to be their best, personally and professionally.
We strive to create an environment where our employees know they are valued for who they are, where every employee is empowered to contribute their unique perspectives and experiences, and where diversity is celebrated as a strength.
Led by our Head of DEI and championed by our management team and board of directors, our DEI initiatives include
- Mitigating unconscious bias through hiring and promoting practices
- Fostering an inclusive culture
- Promoting awareness, engagement, and development
DEI Initiatives
We know that we need a diverse set of experiences, backgrounds, and perspectives to continue to grow, innovate, and meet the needs of our customers. Thus, we have aimed to design a hiring process that reaches across diverse talent pools and seeks to ensure that all candidates receive fair consideration, including using a consistent methodology for evaluating candidates to maintain focus on job-related criteria. We seek diverse candidate slates for management positions as well as interviewer slates designed to have diverse voices involved in the selection process.
We believe that a sense of community and belonging is essential for creating an inclusive workplace. Our employee-led, executive-sponsored Employee Resource Groups provide a platform for employees to connect with others who share similar backgrounds and experiences. Our ERGs include Women in Leadership; Consist: Pride at GATX; Embrace: BIPOC at GATX; and Veterans at GATX. All our ERGs also encourage ally membership. These groups organize events, provide support, and serve as advocates for their respective communities within GATX. We also celebrate heritage and cultural months throughout the year, with programming that highlights the contributions and experiences of various communities. These celebrations include events, panels, and presentations that showcase the diversity of our workforce and promote understanding and appreciation for different perspectives.
We recognize that education is a crucial component of building a more inclusive workplace. That’s why we offer a range of training opportunities and resources for our employees in North America. Throughout the year, employees participate in facilitated in-person and virtual trainings targeted to their positions, such as building inclusive teams and unconscious bias. Further, employees have access to the Everyday Inclusion app, which provides actionable, bite-sized learnings. We also hold an annual Day of Understanding, where employees have the opportunity to participate in panels, workshops, and engage in open and honest discussions about diversity, equity, and inclusion.
